Dubai, 7 September 2015

In high school, Maria D’Costa’s favourite subjects were informatics and programming databases, so it’s no surprise she is studying towards a double degree in Computer Science and Business Information Systems.

Now in her third year, Maria was drawn in by Murdoch’s IT courses. “I liked the fact that it was well-rounded, and was not only about technology, but combined a business aspect,” she said.

The accomplished student is the recipient of the 2014 Vice Vice Chancellor’s Award for Academic Excellence in IT and was offered a 100% scholarship to Murdoch upon joining. “That was beneficial for me and my family,” said the Dubai born and raised Maria. “When I visited the campus and looked around I was attracted by the fact that it was a small campus and there would be a lot of teacher student interaction.”

She also said the helpful, friendly nature of faculty, staff and students is conducive to a good studying environment that is both encouraging and supportive.

In her classes, she is mastering programming languages and finds the business side of the degree makes students well-rounded individuals by not only teaching them technical skills, but by training them in practical soft skills that can be utilized in the real world.

Maria is making the most of her time at Murdoch, participating in extra events like the 2015 Gulf Programming competition, visiting Google’s Dubai offices and even attempting to trek Mount Everest in Nepal just before a major earthquake struck, an experience which offered life lessons.

Though terrifying, Maria said she was thankful for the leadership of her team members. “They were really decisive, they always made the right decisions and took care of us; it’s one experience I’ll never forget,” she said. “We helped and supported each other as a group, we accomplished our goal even though we never set a foot on the mountain.”

Maria’s interest in IT extends outside of the classroom, where she is learning GitHub and Android mobile development. In her downtime she is also a fan of reading classics from Jane Eyre and Charlotte Bronte to Jane Austen.
