Nawaf Al-Janahi Attends Season of Film Finale
Murdoch University in Dubai's Season of Film, in collaboration with DIAC
Last week Murdoch University hosted the finale of its Season of Film in collaboration with DIAC. The Season was a new initiative by Murdoch University in Dubai to create an appreciation of film amongst its students and members of the public. Over the last three weeks Murdoch University in Dubai hosted screenings of short films by popular local directors. Students from other universities in DIAC including Manipal University were invited to join in the debates surrounding the films. The Finale provided students with a platform to have their very own work screened in front of a wide audience and judged on selected criteria. Students and alumni from Murdoch and members of the public submitted their entries for a grand screening in front of a panel of judges including Mr Johan Claasen Murdoch University Dubai’s Academic Director of the School of Media and Communications, Salma Rizwi Head of Student Hub, Gerhard Meyer Murdoch Dubai’s Adjunct lecturer and the Creative Director of Dubai Heritage Vision LLC and Nawaf Al-Janahi Emirati Director, Writer and Actor. After a tough competition, judges were finally able to make a decision on two films; the Best One Minute Short Film “Perfect Living” directed by Faisal Hashmi and the Best Short Film “Seconds” directed by Rahul Talwar.
Students were also treated to some top tips about film-making and given the opportunity to have a one on one interaction with the famous director and pick up some pointers on how to become better at their creative work. Emirati Director, Writer and Actor, Nawaf Al-Janahi's presence was an inspiration to students and the eagerness to show him their hard work was evident on their excited expressions. Nawaf Al-Janahi's film, Sea Shadows is currently in its third week on the big screen and enjoying an extremely positive response. He urged those who hadn't yet seen it to watch it and pick up on ideas on how to improve their work.
Murdoch University in Dubai is a leader in creativity and is home to state of the art film making facilities including a fully equipped TV studio, recording studios and editing suites. Students are encouraged to explore the depths of their creativity and are provided with a support system which allows them to fulfil their ambitions. Murdoch University is also the proud owner of the Murdoch Production Team, headed up by Paurav Shah. The Murdoch Production team have been at the forefront of some of the most high profile events in the UAE, including Formula One and Dubai International Film Festival. The Season of Film was hosted by the Production Team and supported by the faculty and staff members. Murdoch's Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor John Grainger enjoyed a proud moment when he awarded the prize for Best Film to Rahul Talwar “It’s nice to see the fruits of the last few years of hard work. They weren't just watching films all the time in class" he commented and then added jokingly, "it makes a nice change from marking". Students were overwhelmed with his presence at the Finale and enjoyed the company of the man they all look up to.
The Season of Film is the first event of its kind to be hosted at Murdoch Dubai. Talks are already underway for a bigger and more high profile event for next year as Murdoch prepares to launch its Season of Film 2012.
