Dubai: The smiles are back on Shahra Jafar Ali’s face. Until last week the Sri Lankan housemaid’s daughter was staring at an uncertain future as lack of funds had put her dream to study further in doubt. But an XPRESS report highlighting her plight has changed her life. Murdoch University Dubai Ever since the December 12 report, Shahra, 17, has been contacted by hundreds of people offering financial assistance.Not just that, Australia’s Murdoch University Dubai has given her a free seat in a three-year graduation course in Computer Science.

Murdoch University Dubai welcomes 142 individuals to the fellowship of educated men and women

Murdoch University, one of Australia’s most respected andresearch intensive universities,celebrated the graduationMurdoch University Dubai of 142 undergraduate and postgraduate students at its fourth annual graduation celebration yesterday at the Zayed University Convention Centre, Dubai International Academic City. It was followed by a grand reception and dinner for the alumni and their families hosted by the Murdoch University Alumni Association.

Australian Consul-General in Dubai, Mr Gerard Seeber,; Dr. Ibrahim Moosa Jamel, Director of Dubai Knowledge Village; Ms. Wessen Rawazik, Director of Higher Education of Regulations and Compliance Commission (RCC) at the Knowledge and Human Development Authority, Government of Dubai and Mr. Pankaj Savara, Regional Director of Western Australia Trade Office – Middle East, graced the celebration with their presence.

Murdoch University Dubai to hold its 4th annual graduation celebration

Students are at the centre of everything we do at Murdoch University’s Dubai Campus, which is why the university will host a grand celebration for this year’s graduating class together with their families, classmates, alumni and corporate guests. The graduation celebration will take place on November 9th at the Zayed University Convention Centre in Dubai International Academic City.

Murdoch University, one of Australia’s most impressive universities focusing on academic excellence and research, will celebrate the graduation of 142 undergraduate and postgraduate students at its fourth annual graduation celebration. This year’s celebration promises to be exciting and memorable with Mr. Robert Hillier and Mr. Jeff Price as masters of ceremonies. They are both Murdoch faculty members and are U.A.E’s leading Radio and television personalities.

The senior leadership team from Murdoch University in Perth and Dubai attending the event include; Dr. Andrew Webster, Dean of Murdoch University Dubai; Dr. Max Sully, Academic Dean and Mr. Daniel Adkins, Academic Director.

Murdoch kick-starts it festival with two award winning directors

MY. Film Fest (Murdoch’s Youth Film Festival), organized by Murdoch University and MCC Media (Murdoch’s student-run media division), will be hosting an open discussion with award winning and academy nominated directors, Martin Mhando and Scandar Copti on the 6th of November at Grand Cineplex, Wafi.
This discussion is part of the festival’s initiative to encourage film discourse and push towards more film content by young talent. It will also be an avenue for students and young filmmakers to meet and collaborate on future film projects.
The main highlight of the event is the screenings of the shortlisted participants in the MY.Film Fest short film competition, which saw entries from the high school, university and open category.
The winners of these categories will be announced by the judging panel based on criteria such as cinematography, script and the overall narrative of the film.
Prizes for the competition have been sponsored by Advance Media, SanDisk and BHM Store.
Debuting as Murdoch’s first festival and riding on the great initiatives of the Dubai and Abu Dhabi’s international film festivals; this event hopes to be an incentive for its young participants to continuously contribute towards building a UAE-based film industry.

Famous for his unchecked risk appetite which resulted in the collapse of 223 year old Barings Bank in 1995; Nick Leeson explores his journey and then reformation in a self-reflexive study towards effective corporate responsibility, compliance and risk management.

He has been with the Murdoch name for seven years and these, says Dr Andrew Webster, have been the most memorable and enriching years in all. His recent appointment as Dean of Murdoch University International Study Centre Dubai is a reiteration of the university’s commitment to maintaining its high academic standards in the management and delivery of its academic programs in Dubai. Looking back at the seven years he has been attached with Murdoch, Dr Webster says, “I have witnessed growth not just at the university but also in self. The university has developed astonishingly. There have been enormous expansion in the transnational area of our academic operations during this time. We grew greatly in Singapore, we opened this campus in Dubai. Plus, we have the Open Universities Australia which is an open access education initiative across Australia and Australian universities. The creation of a new graduate school last year – all reflects of a time where we have tried to grow along with Western Australia and the region.”

Acclaimed film director Nawaf Al Janahi to conduct short film workshop at Murdoch Dubai

Murdoch University Dubai is hosting a short-film workshop in September in collaboration with acclaimed Emirati film Director, Nawaf Al Janahi.

Nawaf Al-Janahi directed Sea Shadow (2011), an Emirati film written by Mohammed Hassan Ahmed. The film premiered at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival in October 2011 and was released in theaters across the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain in November 2011. The movie also premiered in the United States at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

Set in an arabesque theme, the event was held at the Crowne Plaza Dubai on Sheikh Zayed Road, highlighting alumni achievements with a very special Iftar celebration. It was an opportunity for Murdoch alumni to share their experiences and reconnect with old friends and faculty

Daniel Adkins, Academic Director and MC for the evening, introduced Hasan Murad, President of the Murdoch Alumni Association who addressed the alumni body with a heartfelt welcome. This was followed by Dr Grainger who headlined the evening with a brief history of Murdoch University, Dubai, and faculty members and Murdoch Alumni, Carol Pinto and Munnawar Ahmed, who shared highlights from their charitable campaign for labourers in the UAE, Mission Sonapur.

New Chancellor for Murdoch University

Murdoch University’s Senate is pleased to announce the appointment of Non Executive Chairman Atlas Iron, David Flanagan as the new Chancellor of the University..

Mr Flanagan will take the reins from Mr Terry Budge, who is retiring from the role after nearly seven years.

A geologist by trade, Mr Flanagan has more than 20 years experience in mining and mineral exploration in Australia, Indonesia and West Africa.

Murdoch debuts at 57 in top 100 universities under 50

Submitting data for the first time, Murdoch University has debuted in the second annual Times Higher Education (THE) 100 Under 50rankings, with a ranking of 57.

The rankings are a global list of universities under the age of 50 and were formally launched at theFestival of Education at Wellington College in the UK.

Murdoch University Vice Chancellor Professor Richard Higgott said the result was a testament to the extraordinary work the University was undertaking to Top Ranked Universityrevitalise its research and teaching.

“Being ranked 57 in the THE 100 Under 50 rankings confirms Murdoch’s international standing” he said.

“Today’s announcement, together with our listing in the Top 400 of the Times Higher Education’s overall World University Rankings in 2012, confirms that the dramatic reforms in the University over the last 2 years are paying dividends.

“The world of higher education is truly global and we need to evolve to meet this new reality. We are committed to enhancing the international reputation of the University through both quality teaching and research excellence, and this ranking is proof that we are well on our way to achieving this.

Murdoch University Dubai’s MEd Masterclass: 21st Century Learning in a Multicultural Classroom

Murdoch University, Dubai brought together some of the most prominent schools across the UAE last night at their exclusive Master of Education Master Class. In a bid to promote the benefits of a Masters level qualification in Education, the University drew on the support of Program Coordinator of the Master of Education Program at Murdoch, Claire Macrae, and the founders of IngeniousEd, Francesca McGeary and Alison Schofield.

The event saw over 70 teachers from as far as Abu Dhabi and Al Ain join the interactive sessions on 21st Century Learning in a multicultural classroom. As the evening unfolded, the revelations of technology as a learning tool became very clear. Claire Macrae's address on the topic of From Textbooks to Tablets talked the audience through the effective and smart use of technology in the classroom as opposed to following out-dated teaching methods.

The Annual Counselors Workshop 2013

In a bid to overcome the challenges faced by school counselors in the UAE, Murdoch University, Dubai hosted its Annual Counselors Workshop with a focus on how higher education institutions can enhance the roles of counselors.

The Workshop is hosted by Murdoch each year to encourage discussion around the education system. Interestingly, research shows a perception that counselors are still not doing enough to help students prepare for life after leaving the education system. This issue is commonly faced by higher education institutions when students are not equipped with the soft skills that are required to manage the workload at University. As a result, higher education institutions are forced to spend more time on critical thinking workshops.

Murdoch IT Student receives full Australian Scholarship

Murdoch University, Dubai will be bidding farewell to IT student Vladyslav Kalinin as he embarks on his post graduate at Murdoch University, Perth. Vlad has been awarded a full Scholarship to enable him to pursue his Honours Degree based on his success last year, with the potential to continue onto a PhD. Vlad became Murdoch Dubai’s first IT student to receive the Vice Chancellors Commendation for Academic Excellence. His scholarship has come by way of his exceptional achievement and is definitely the icing on the cake.

The Marketing Marauders from The Cambridge International School, Dubai was all smiles on Tuesday night after their incredible win for the second time at the finale of the Murdoch Business Cup Challenge 2012. Cambridge International School were also the winners of the first Business Cup Challenge last year when Murdoch University, Dubai launched the event. Team members, Humna Shaikh, Jovan VelroyFernandes, Samar Bawaney, Arhan Anand and Aaster Sen impressed the judges with their exceptional presentation skills and a host of innovative ideas for a new product launch for Facebook with a realistic pricing model. The final prize included AED 5000 in National Bonds courtesy of National Bonds, AED 500 Aldo Vouchers and AED 1000 Call it Spring Vouchers courtesy of the Apparel Group and a live interview on Josh 97.8 courtesy of Josh 97.8. Prizes were awarded to the proud team by Murdoch University, Dubai co-founder, Mr Rakesh Wahi and the Commissioner for the Middle East and Africa for the Western Australia Trade Office, Mr Pankaj Sawara. The team were also presented with tablet Computers by Murdoch University, Dubai.

Hosted at Dubai Community Arts and Theatre Centre, (DUCTAC), the Murdoch Business School high school event celebrated its second Business Cup Challenge with a total of 60 participating schools from across the GCC. Teams were presented with 4 case studies to discuss and present over a four week period, the final one was presented by the ten top teams at the Finale. This year’s second prize went to The Business Angels from The Deira International School who were also chosen as The Judge’s Choice to compete in the final top ten. 3rd prize was awarded to Business Buffs from the Delhi Private School.
