Internships prepare Murdoch University Dubai students for career success

January 26, 2016

Internships are a great way to enhance a student’s classroom learning by gaining real world experience. They also give students practical know-how while providing them with valuable industry contacts following graduation.

Companies are now on the lookout for students who are willing to be part of a growing workforce as potential interns. The internship opportunities received by Murdoch University Dubai students help them to realize their career dreams of working for major companies like 7 Days, Thomson Reuters, CPI Media group, MWH Global, Emirates NBD, Ogilvy, Google and many more upon graduation. Having had the advantage of doing a double major, Murdoch Dubai graduates have broad skills that equip them to meet industry requirements.

Murdoch also gives its students the opportunity to work internally while pursuing their studies. Marketing and Student Recruitment intern Zelyn Mirano, who is currently a first year student majoring in Finance and Marketing said, “I am glad that I’ve been given this opportunity at a very young age. It has really helped me to understand what I’m good at, and has helped me choose my fields of interest. I was given numerous tasks where I had to apply my critical thinking, inter-personal and problem solving skills.”

Murdoch’s recent media graduate Ahmed Al Saidy, who is currently the Social Media Manager at 7 Days, had worked closely with the marketing department during his final year. He said “Being able to work in the university during really busy times and with the support and positive outlook the team shared, I was able to acquire solid experience. This indeed helped me land in a job immediately upon graduation.”

Anahita Negarandeh who studied at York University in Toronto, Canada had come to the UAE to experience Dubai life and eventually found herself interning with Murdoch Dubai, engaging in student life activities. She said “The experience at Murdoch has helped me realize what my core strengths are, and gave me an exposure to the Dubai market. I would definitely consider moving back to this city and exploring the unlimited opportunities.”

Murdoch University Dubai provides employability skills for students through its Teaching & Learning Coordinator (TLC), Livia Fama. Resume and cover letter writing, interview skills, and job search strategies are few of the many services that Ms Livia provides. The TLC also acts as a job clearinghouse by posting many career opportunities for students.

There is an old adage which says, ‘It’s not what you know, but who you know.’ But, in today’s competitive job market, it can be re-written as ‘it is what you know AND who you know’ that often makes the difference. The benchmark of any university lies in the success of its graduates and Murdoch University Dubai is especially proud to see its students graduate career-ready and successfully begin working at some of the premier companies in Dubai and beyond.
